Cowart poised and focused (c) Mike Scott 2012

Donnie Cowart went into the US Olympic Trials 3000m steeplechase final ranked 11th out of 14th from the preliminary round. Cowart’s goal going into the final was to mix it up with the leaders and be competitive. Cowart started mid-pack and slowly moved his way to the front the whole race. At the bell, Donnie was right where he wanted to be, with the leaders giving himself a chance to do something special. Cowart fought all the way to the end, passing another runner with less than 100 meters to go to capture fourth place in a time of 8:27.49.

While fourth can be the most heartbreaking place at the US Olympic Trials as only the top three finishers make the Olympic team, Donnie was ecstatic with his race. This was because for him, placing fourth at the Olympic Trials was unthinkable just a few years ago. Since then, he has improved by leaps and bounds due to his hard work, discipline, and tenacity not only in his running but everyday life. While Cowart did not make the Olympic team this year, he sees the big picture and is very excited for his future, which includes racing in Europe this summer and looking forward to the Olympic Trials in 2016.

The article and interview posted below show well his exuding enthusiasm and passion for running as he talks about his race and his plans for the future.
