The first track day of the US Olympic Trials featured the finals of the 10,000m. Rachel Ward qualified for the final by running 32:47.97 at the Payton Jordan Invitational in April. After a downpour in the men’s 10,000m final, the rain subsided for the women’s race.
The race got out honest with the best women in the country all running in a big pack. Ward put herself in good position in the middle of the field and sat patiently.
As the laps went by, women fell off. Fueled by a huge cheering section which included her husband, family, friends, and members of the RMR team, Rachel stayed in contact with the lead pack for much of the race, covering moves and racing tough.
In only her second 10,000m on the track in her career, Ward raced like a veteran and finished 15th in a time of 32:39.53, a nine second personal best (full results can be found below).
This was a great race for Ward as she gained experience racing at the national level and performed very well. At only 22 years old, the future is bright for Rachel as she will look to build on this milestone and continue to grow and develop as a runner. Looking ahead to next year, her performance auto qualifies her for the 2013 USA Championships.
RMR action continues on Monday when Donnie Cowart toes the line in the 3000m steeplechase prelims at 5:25pm (Pacific Time). TV coverage on June 25th will be from 9-11pm on NBCSN.

Donnie Cowart and Kent Pecora competed in a highly competitive 3000m steeplechase at the American Milers Series Meet 3 in Indianapolis, Indiana this past Wednesday. For both guys, the goal was to improve upon their current bests to improve their standing for the Olympic Trials and beyond.
Cowart followed the rabbit from the gun as he chased the Olympic ‘A’ standard of 8:23. After the rabbit dropped out at 2k, Donnie was all alone out front. While his final time of 8:26.51 was just off the mark, it was a personal best on American soil and only 0.13 off of his all-time best set last year in Finland. In the interview below, Donnie talks about his race and sounds poised and confident going into the Olympic Trials.
Pecora’s goal going into the race was to improve upon his Olympic Trials ‘B’ standard of 8:40.39 in order to move up on the list to ensure himself a spot at the Olympic Trials. Pecora competed well but came up a bit short, running 8:41.79 for 11th place. Video and results of the race can be found below.
