Cowart wins Blue Shoes Mile

Donnie Cowart traveled to Greenville, South Carolina to compete in the Blue Shoes Elite Mile at the Furman Invitational. Cowart started off in the back of the pack the first lap then moved up into fourth during the second lap. After the rabbit dropped out with 600 meters to go, Cowart made a move and took the lead with 450 meters to go. Once there Donnie was able to hold off Ryan Witt for the win in 4:00.62. This betters Cowart’s previous best of 4:02.92 set indoors this past winter at the Great Dane Classic. A video of the race as well as full results from the meet can be found below. Donnie’s next race will be at the Payton Jordan Invitational in two weeks where he will be looking for a fast time in his primary event, the 3000m steeplechase.

Impressive Track Openers Headline Weekend for RMR

For the second week in a row, several RMR harriers tested their fitness in various races. Kent Pecora, Rachel Ward, Sallie Ford, and Louise Knudson headed to Williamsburg, Virginia to compete in the Colonial Relays. Pecora ran his first steeple of the year in a competitive field that produced two sub nine minute performances. Pecora started out conservatively in the back of the pack and finished strong, running 9:05.53 for third place. This is another good sign that Kent is getting fitter every week and is gearing up for bigger and better things in the coming weeks.

As for the women, Ward and Ford competed in heat 1 of the 5000m while Knudson competed in heat 2. In her 5000m track debut, Louise started off in the middle of the pack and slowly moved up the field. By the end she was able to move into second place and finished in a time of 17:19.68. In heat 1, Rachel took the lead and set an aggressive pace from the gun. After battling two other ladies in the closing laps, Ward came up just short of the victory, finishing second in a time of 16:05.81 in her 5000m track debut. Her debut performance is impressive considering Ward ran a fast 10k on the roads just six days before. Also in heat 1, Ford battled tired legs, running 17:09.58 in a solid effort. Results and videos of the races can be found below.

Big Racing Weekend for RMR

RMR harriers took to the roads and the track this weekend at three separate locations. Rachel Ward, Louise Knudson, Seth Hutchinson, and Charlie Hurt traveled to Richmond Virginia to compete against 33,000+ runners in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k. Rachel Ward led the way with a big third place finish (1st American) running 33:22. Although this race was on the road, her time bettered the Olympic Trials ‘B’ standard of 34:00 which bodes well for later in the spring. Knudson also had a good showing as she is still new to the ‘shorter’ races, running 36:32 for 10th place.  Hutchinson and Hurt had solid races, finishing in 30:50 for 10th and 31:14 for 11th, respectively. Results of the 10k can be found below.

Ann Mazur also hit the roads at the Charlottesville Ten Miler in RMR’s backyard. Ann improved on last year’s time by over two minutes, running 1:04:15 for second place. RMR worked hard behind the scenes in this race as well. In particular, RMR athlete Mike Inge was the race director and was integral in the success of the event that raised tens of thousands of dollars for lung cancer research at UVA. An article recapping the race and results can be found below.

Last but not least, Kent Pecora stepped on the track for the first time this spring in the 1500m at Raleigh Relays. Pecora hung back early and moved up well, finishing in 3:56.50 for 4th. Pecora’s performances in the McCormick Mile last week and the 1500m this week show that his comeback from an injury in the winter is progressing well and the times should continue to drop as the spring goes on. Results of the meet can be found below, with Pecora in Section IV.

RMR action continues this coming weekend as Rachel Ward, Sallie Ford, Louise Knudson, and Ann Mazur head to Williamsburg, Virginia to compete in the 5000m at Colonial Relays. On the men’s side, Donnie Cowart opens his outdoor campaign at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational in the steeplechase.
