Mike Smayda and Thomas Adam competed at the Liberty Open this past weekend in Lynchburg, Virginia. Smayda ran the 500 to work on his speed and ran 1:06:32 to place 2nd in his heat and 3rd overall. The time was a PR for Smayda and he is beginning to round into track shape after his long absence from the sport. Adam won the 3k in 8:41.34 pulling away from 2nd and 3rd place in the final lap. This was an indoor PR for Adam as he ran 8:49 at the same meet last year.

Charlie Hurt ran 49:16 to place 2nd at the Frostbite 15k in Richmond, Virginia. This was a good race for Hurt as he begins to train for a half marathon this spring.

To kick off the indoor track season the RMR mid-distance group traveled to VT January 21st to run a 4×800 meter relay. With Mike Inge going under the knife only months earlier we were in need of a fourth man. Thankfully Chris Post, normally a distance guy, stepped up agreeing to run 800 meters and lead off the relay. This allowed the rest of the relay (Donnie Cowart, Macklin Chaffee, and Mike Smayda) to play catch up and run fast than we might have other wise. Chris brought the stick around in 2:02.50, a personal best for him, keeping RMR in the hunt at 8th place. The chase was on, Donnie, also running a personal best, would move the team up running 1:50.29 to hand off in 5th. Macklin would do more of the same, running 1:52.95, a few tenths from his personal best, handing off in 3rd a few steps off the lead group. Mike would close strong with his best indoor debut performance to date running 1:55.54 to hold on to 3rd with 7:41.28.
